Story

1971 Plymouth 'Cuda 440 Six Barrel

The 1971 440 Six Barrel 'Cuda combined Plymouth's redesigned four-headlamp E-body with the triple-carbureted RB big-block. Rated at 385 gross horsepower for 1971, it was the largest regular-production engine below the Hemi and could be paired with an A833 four-speed or heavy-duty 727 TorqueFlite automatic.

The drivetrain package brought heavy-duty axle and chassis requirements. The cited fact sheet identifies a Dana 60 with the manual transmission and optional Dana availability with the automatic, while ratios, Sure-Grip equipment, brakes, power assist, N96 Shaker, wheels, and cabin equipment still depended on the original order.

The cited secondary production reference reports 254 1971 Barracudas with the 440 Six Barrel: 113 four-speeds and 141 automatics. These figures remain attributed while a primary Chrysler production ledger is still sought.

Nineteen documented paint choices and the available billboard graphics, Shaker hood, wheels, seats, console, and Rallye instruments produced many legitimate combinations. Current paint, a Shaker, or 440+6 graphics do not prove how a particular car was built.

For authentication, begin with the V engine character in the VIN, then reconcile the fender tag, broadcast sheet, body numbers, engine and transmission stampings, axle, carburetion, hidden paint, and cabin trim. Installed Six Barrel equipment alone cannot establish factory identity.
