Story

1970 Dodge Coronet R/T 440 Six Pack

The 1970 Coronet R/T was Dodge's top Coronet performance model, offered as a two-door hardtop or convertible. The optional E87 440 Six Pack combined three two-barrel carburetors with a 390-horsepower gross rating, while R/T equipment supplied heavy-duty brakes, extra-heavy-duty suspension, bucket seats, hood scoops, and model-specific identification.

The production references report 194 Six Pack hardtops and 16 convertibles. They further divide the hardtops evenly between 97 four-speeds and 97 TorqueFlite automatics; the convertibles are reported as seven four-speeds and nine automatics. These figures remain source-reported rather than factory-ledger totals.

Axle choices depended on transmission and package. The cited specifications list a 3.54 ratio for the manual path and 3.23 for the automatic path, with optional performance ratios and Sure-Grip availability. Exact axle, ratio, brake, stripe, and trim claims still need the individual car's fender tag, broadcast sheet, and drivetrain records.

Authentication starts with the V engine character in the VIN and agreement among the tag, broadcast sheet, engine and transmission stampings, axle documentation, paint, trim, and stripe codes. R/T badges, Bumble Bee graphics, hood scoops, or added Six Pack induction do not establish an original factory configuration by themselves.

Still Researching

  • engine The 1970 parts-catalog carburetor chart now resolves Holley front, center, and rear carburetor vendor and service numbers for B/J/R/W/P 440 3-2 bbl applications by ECS and transmission, but complete engine assembly, casting, and date-code tables are still not recorded.
  • transmission Both transmission paths are recorded, but complete application numbers and date windows are not.
  • rear axle Standard and optional ratios are recorded, but the complete transmission, package, axle, and Sure-Grip code matrix is not reconciled.
  • brakes Standard heavy-duty drums and optional front discs are recorded, but every package dependency and component number is not.
  • suspension The parts catalog has resolved standard 1970 426/440 high-performance B-body front torsion bar part numbers 1857780 (RH) / 1857781 (LH) and rear leaf spring part numbers 3004768 (RH) / 3004767 (LH), but shock-absorber and anti-roll-bar part applications are not completely reconciled, and individual car verification (e.g. broadcast sheet, paint markings) is inherently required.
  • option packages Major engine, axle, and stripe options are recorded, but the complete ordering and incompatibility matrix is not.
  • production Body and transmission counts are recorded, but a factory ledger or authoritative registry reconciliation is still needed.
  • paint colors The Coronet R/T palette is recorded, but stripe pairings and individual-car finish require factory documentation.
  • trim and appearance R/T graphics, hood, badge, stripe, and tire context are recorded, but the complete sales-code matrix is not.
  • interior Seat, trim-code, gauge, and steering-wheel rows are recorded, but the complete upholstery and console matrix is not.
  • authenticity markers Factory parts-catalog information now records engine and transmission identification-number formats and stamp locations, but exact V-code Coronet drivetrain part/application numbers, car-specific stamp agreement, and survivor date-window guidance remain incomplete.
