Story
1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440 Six Pack
The first-year Challenger R/T combined Dodge's new E-body shape with its strongest street powertrains. The V-code 440 Six Pack sat between the single-four-barrel 440 Magnum and the 426 Hemi, using three two-barrel carburetors to produce a factory-rated 390 gross horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque.
Buyers could pair the 440 Six Pack with an A833 four-speed manual or a 727 TorqueFlite automatic. Axle equipment depended on the transmission and package: reviewed references document 8.75-inch and Dana 60 paths, Sure-Grip differentials, and 3.54 or 4.10 performance ratios. Every individual car should be checked against its fender tag, broadcast sheet, axle identification, and surviving drivetrain stampings.
R/T equipment included the twin-scoop power-bulge hood, Rallye instruments, bucket seats, heavy-duty suspension, and larger brakes. The Shaker hood, longitudinal side stripes, bumblebee tail stripe, vinyl roof, rear spoiler, and several wheel treatments created many legitimate appearances, so there is no single correct visual formula for every car.
Reviewed production references report 1,640 R/T hardtops and 99 R/T convertibles with the 440 Six Pack. A further 296 R/T SE hardtops used the engine; those more formal cars are covered separately. For any claimed factory Six Pack, the JS R/T identity and V engine character are the starting points, followed by consistent tags, paperwork, body numbers, and drivetrain dates.
