Story

1969 Dodge Super Bee A12 440 Six Pack

The A12 Super Bee arrived midway through 1969 with one of the era's most recognizable factory performance packages. Dodge paired the Coronet-based Super Bee with a 440-cubic-inch RB V8, three Holley two-barrel carburetors on an aluminum intake, and a factory rating of 390 horsepower and 490 lb-ft. The package was offered on the WM21 coupe and WM23 hardtop.

The rest of the A12 package was just as purposeful. Buyers chose an A833 four-speed manual or a heavy-duty 727 TorqueFlite automatic, both backed by a 9-3/4-inch Dana 60 Sure-Grip with 4.10 gears in the checked references. Heavy-duty suspension, 11-inch drum brakes, 15 x 6-inch black steel wheels, G70-15 redline tires, and the pin-secured flat-black fiberglass lift-off hood completed the factory combination. Disc brakes, air conditioning, and cruise control were not offered with the package.

Registry figures cited by Hemmings and Hot Rod account for 1,907 U.S. A12 Super Bees: 420 WM21 coupes and 1,487 WM23 hardtops. Their transmission rows total 1,093 four-speed cars and 814 automatics. Export and Canadian records are not consistently included, so those figures should be read as the documented registry scope rather than a worldwide total.

An original A12 car should have an M in the fifth VIN position and A12 evidence on the fender tag, supported by the broadcast sheet, body stampings, engine and transmission numbers, axle evidence, and ownership records. The lift-off hood, black wheels, stripes, badges, and Six Pack induction can all be added later, so appearance alone does not establish a factory A12 build.

Authenticity

A12 Brakes reference for the 1969 Dodge Super Bee A12Classic Muscle · Reference illustration
  • VIN engine character Fifth VIN symbol should be M for the special-order 440-6, with Hemmings noting some sources claim exceptions · VIN plate at base of windshield · fraud detection
  • A12 package code A12 should appear on fender-tag evidence for an A12 car · Fender tag; corroborate with broadcast sheet where available · trim correctness
  • Axle code 999 for Dana 60 4.10 Sure Grip axle per Hemmings · Fender tag/build record; axle assembly evidence · trim correctness
  • Engine-number location Upper left front area of block is cited for engine number location · Engine block stamping area; compare to build records · numbers matching
  • Body stampings and paper records Original fender tag, broadcast sheet, and radiator-support/body stampings are important corroborators · Fender tag, broadcast sheet, radiator support/body stampings · fraud detection
  • Fender-tag and build-sheet engine-code carryover Hemmings/Frank Badalson reports that an A12 Super Bee should still have M as the fifth VIN symbol, while the left-inner-fender body tag bottom line should show E63 and an intact build sheet may also show a 383 engine because the A12 was built from the 383 Super Bee pathway. · VIN plate, left inner-fender body/fender tag, and original build sheet · fraud detection
  • Transmission package tag code Hemmings/Frank Badalson says to look for fender-tag code 925 for the four-speed path or 926 for the automatic path when checking the engine/transmission package. · Fender tag/body tag; corroborate with the broadcast sheet and transmission-number evidence · trim correctness
  • Build-sheet rear-spring codes Hemmings/Frank Badalson reports build-sheet spring codes 965 for the right rear spring and 795 for the left rear spring, while noting that early A12 Super Bees can show the standard 213 spring code on the build sheet. · Original build sheet; compare with rear-spring assembly evidence during inspection · trim correctness

Still Researching

  • paint colors The general 1969 Dodge mid-size palette is shown, but a factory matrix limiting colors specifically for the mid-year A12 package was not normalized.
  • option packages Core A12 equipment and exclusions are recorded, but the full factory option compatibility and price schedule remains incomplete.
  • interior Seats, console, and gauges are recorded, but the factory upholstery color and trim-code matrix was not available.
  • suspension Hemi-grade torsion bars, stabilizer, springs, and shocks are described, but factory part numbers remain incomplete.
  • production The 1,907-car registry scope excludes or inconsistently handles export and Canadian records.
  • authenticity markers Package-level VIN and A12 tag markers are recorded, and this pass added source-backed fender-tag/build-sheet cross-checks for the E63 base-engine carryover, 925/926 transmission package codes, and 965/795 rear-spring build-sheet codes. An individual car still requires inspection of original tags, stampings, dates, drivetrain numbers, and paperwork; factory body-stamping/date references and documented survivor comparisons remain incomplete.
