Story
1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
The 1981 Trans Am closed the second-generation Firebird run with three documented V8 paths, a regular or hatch-roof body, the WS6 chassis package, and Y84 and Y85 special editions. They belong on one model-year page because engines, roofs, chassis equipment, and appearance packages are configurations of the Trans Am W87 rather than separate car identities.
Three V8 paths
The standard L37 Pontiac 301 used a four-barrel carburetor and three-speed automatic. The optional LU8 Turbo 301 added draw-through turbocharging, required air conditioning, and also used the automatic. The Chevrolet LG4 305 paired with a four-speed manual in the regular United States application; published Canadian and production summaries conflict over some automatic LG4 cars, so those exceptions remain a documented application gap. VIN character, engine code, induction, emissions equipment, transmission, axle, dates, and records must agree.
Chassis, brakes, and WS6
Trans Am equipment included Radial Tuned Suspension, heavy-duty springs and dampers, power steering, and power front discs with rear drums. J65 supplied rear discs. WS6 combined four-wheel discs with 15 x 8 wheels, 225/70R15 tires, and larger stabilizer bars. G80 limited slip was optional or package-dependent. Wheels or a rear-disc conversion cannot prove an original WS6 build.
Body, cabin, colors, and editions
The front air dam, wheel-opening spoilers, rear spoiler, fender extractors, engine-turned instrument panel, rally gauges, bucket seats, and console defined the Trans Am presentation. Thirteen reviewed exterior colors apply; Bright Yellow code 51 did not. Graphics changed during the year, and Y84 or Y85 identity requires complete paint, graphics, cabin, drivetrain, roof, chassis, date, and documentary evidence rather than decals alone.
Production and proof boundaries
The reviewed totals report 33,493 Trans Ams, including 2,000 Y85 Daytona Pace Car editions. Body and trim rows reconcile to that total, but published transmission and engine subtotals conflict. This page therefore publishes the supported total and special-edition count while preserving finer production accounting as a gap. Authentication starts with VIN, title, body plate, shell, and ownership history, then reconciles every drivetrain, chassis, finish, cabin, option, and dated component.
