Story
1980 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
The 1980 Firebird Trans Am family combined two-door four-passenger sport coupe with fixed roof or removable hatch roof panels with L37 4.9-liter V8, W72 4.9-liter E/C V8, LU8 Turbo 4.9-liter V8, California LG4 5.0-liter V8 configurations. This page keeps those factory choices together without treating an engine, stripe, badge, or trim package as a separate car identity.
Engines and transmissions
The 1980 Trans Am moved to four automatic-only V8 paths. Federal cars used L37, W72, or LU8 Pontiac 301 engines; California cars used the Chevrolet LG4 305. VIN character, engine code, induction, emissions equipment, transmission, axle, cooling, exhaust, dates, and factory records must reconcile to one path. Transmission, induction, cooling, exhaust, axle, emissions equipment, and dates must match the selected engine path.
Chassis and brakes
Every Trans Am used heavy-duty Radial Tuned Suspension, a leaf-sprung live rear axle, power steering, power front discs with rear drums, and Safe-T-Track. J65 supplied four-wheel discs, while WS6 combined those discs with larger stabilizer bars, 15 x 8 wheels, and 225/70R15 tires. Ratios remained tied to engine application. Brake, steering, spring, damper, axle, ratio, wheel, and tire equipment varied by configuration and must be reconciled to factory and car-specific records.
Body, trim, and proof
Start with VIN or serial, body tag, title, shell, and ownership history. Then reconcile drivetrain, chassis, protected finish, cabin, trim, dates, and records. Replaceable badges, stripes, wheels, or a swapped engine cannot establish factory configuration.
