Story

1974 Plymouth Duster 360

The 1974 Duster 360 was Plymouth's compact performance coupe after the 340 left the engine catalog. It was a distinct factory model, not a base Duster with a later 360 swap and not the appearance-oriented Gold Duster or Twister. Its identifying boundary is the VS29L4 VIN pattern backed by the fender tag, broadcast sheet, drivetrain evidence, and the car's own history.

Plymouth made the E58 360 four-barrel standard and paired it with a floor-shifted heavy-duty three-speed manual. Buyers could choose the A833 four-speed or 727 TorqueFlite. The package also brought dual exhaust, heavy-duty torsion-bar and leaf-spring suspension, a front anti-sway bar, power front disc brakes, an 8 1/4-inch rear axle, E70-14 tires, 14 x 5.5-inch wheels, and model-specific side and rear tape stripes. The familiar Rallye wheels, white-letter tires, Sure-Grip, 3.55 gearing, Space Duster folding rear seat, sliding steel sunroof, bucket seats, console, and black hood treatment were choices rather than proof of identity.

Factory advertising rated the 360 at 245 SAE net horsepower and 320 lb-ft. The model-specific production figure most consistently reported is 3,969 cars, but transmission and option counts remain unresolved. Period-looking stripes, scoops, wheels, or a blue-painted 360 cannot authenticate a particular car: the VIN, tag, broadcast sheet, component numbers and dates, protected paint, and documented restoration history must agree.

  • engine Factory references establish the E58 specification, service short engine, head, crankshaft, damper, cam and timing set, connecting rod, distributor, carburetor applications, serial-pad format, and core service specifications, but complete bare-block casting, supersession, engineering-revision, component-date, assembly-date applicability, and individual-engine matrices are not recovered.
  • transmission The three-speed, A833, and 727 paths and published ratios are recorded, but complete assembly numbers and date windows are not.
  • rear axle The 8 1/4-inch family, Duster 360 ratios, Sure-Grip rules, compact V-line housing package, axle-shaft service part, carrier casting identifiers, and ratio-tag location are documented. Exact production assembly codes, build-date windows, running revisions, and an individual car's original installation remain unresolved.
  • brakes Standard dimensions and key Valiant-line slider-caliper, hub/disc, adapter, lining, hose, master-cylinder, warning-tee, rear-drum, rear-cylinder, rear-hose, power-unit, and December 17, 1973 seal-change service applications are documented; complete supplier, engineering-number, effective-date, and supersession schedules remain unresolved.
  • suspension Core heavy-duty torsion-bar, sway-bar, shock, and leaf-spring specifications are recorded, but complete part applications and change dates are not.
  • option packages Exact-year factory data-book pages 82 and 88-91 now document 39 principal Duster 360 standard, extra-cost, package, and no-charge paths with major restrictions, but the archive states that dealership data books are not complete option lists. No final order guide, dealer price schedule, cancellation matrix, dated sales-code revision ledger, complete color/trim compatibility table, or individual-car order record was recovered; the data-book E55 label also remains unreconciled with the accepted E58 360 code.
  • production The 3,969-car model total is consistently reported, but factory-backed transmission, axle, paint, sunroof, and interior splits are not.
  • paint colors The 16-color brochure palette and paint codes are recorded, but all stripe, roof, and interior compatibility restrictions are not.
  • trim and appearance Standard stripes, fender emblem, wheel baseline, and major options are recorded, but every sales-code combination and stripe-delete rule is not.
  • interior Bench, bucket, console, shifter, and steering-wheel choices are recorded, but the complete upholstery-code and color matrix is not.
  • authenticity markers VS29L4, configuration checks, factory engine and transmission identifier locations, identifier formats, date-code tables, and the production VIN-derivative rule are recorded, but exact D13, D21, and D34 assembly applications and acceptable car-specific component date windows remain incomplete.
