Story

1973 AMC Javelin AMX

The four-seat Javelin AMX entered 1973 with a 304 two-barrel V8 as standard equipment, not a 360. Buyers could step through a 360 two-barrel, a 360 four-barrel, or the 401 four-barrel. The two high-output engines could be paired with AMC's Go Package, which combined cowl-air induction, dual exhaust, heavy-duty cooling and handling equipment, Twin-Grip, power front discs, Rally-Pac instruments, 15-inch wheels and tires, a hood T-stripe, and a black rear panel.

The standard 304 used a floor-shift three-speed; an A998 automatic was optional. The 360 two-barrel required the A727 automatic, while the 360 four-barrel and 401 could use either the A727 or a close-ratio Borg-Warner four-speed with Hurst linkage. Axle ratios followed the engine and transmission rather than one universal AMX specification.

The AMX retained its mesh grille, high front fenders, rear spoiler, slot-style wheels, high-back buckets, three-spoke wheel, and engine-turned instrument panel. Sixteen reviewed Javelin colors were available. The Pierre Cardin interior was a separate 1973 option, not proof of a Go Package or 401.

AMC produced 5,707 Javelin AMXs for 1973. An individual car should reconcile the VIN, door tag, order or build records, window sticker, engine family and date tag, transmission, axle, paint, trim, and surviving original features. Badges, a T-stripe, a cowl hood, or a replacement V8 cannot authenticate the car by themselves.

Still Researching

  • engine Factory and specialist records establish all four engine paths, but a complete dated 1973 carburetor, casting, tag, emissions, and ancillary-component matrix was not recovered.
  • production AMX totals and broad engine splits are known, but the reviewed source does not split 360 two- versus four-barrel, transmission, Go Package, paint, or interior production.
  • option packages The factory specifications page now normalizes the major packages and 42 directly listed AMX-applicable standalone options and restrictions, but it does not provide the complete dealer sales-code, dollar-price, effective-date, revision, regional, or combination-order matrix.
  • authenticity markers Core VIN, engine-family, factory V8 code/casting locations, Go Package, paint, and trim checks are known, but complete component-date and assembly-number guidance remains unresolved.
