Story

1972 AMC Javelin AMX 401

The 1972 Javelin AMX carried AMC's largest engine into the second year of the dramatic wide-fender body. Its 401-cubic-inch four-barrel V8 was rated at 255 SAE net horsepower and 345 lb-ft of torque. A Borg-Warner T-10 four-speed remained available, while AMC replaced the earlier Borg-Warner automatic with the Chrysler-built Torque-Command A727 for 360 and 401 cars.

The AMX was the performance version of the four-seat Javelin, not the separate two-seat AMX built through 1970. AMX details included the mesh grille, cowl-induction hood, front and rear spoilers, badging, and model-specific trim. The optional Go Package combined the 360 or 401 four-barrel with dual exhaust, Rally-Pac instruments, the handling package, heavy-duty cooling, Twin-Grip, power front discs, 15-inch wheels and tires, a hood T-stripe, and a black rear panel. AMX appearance or a 401 engine alone does not establish the Go Package.

AMC offered nineteen exterior colors for 1972, plus vinyl or corduroy upholstery choices in multiple cabin colors. The midyear Pierre Cardin interior added striped red, silver, plum, and white fabric against black, but it was independent of the 401 and Go Package.

American Motors records reported by Hemmings list 26,184 Javelins, including 3,220 AMXs. Of those AMXs, 825 carried the 401. For an individual car, the AMX body code, Z-code 401 VIN evidence, engine tag and casting dates, transmission identity, axle tag, door tag, build sheet, window sticker, and original paperwork should agree.
