Story

1968 AMC Javelin

American Motors launched the four-seat Javelin for 1968 as a clean-sheet pony car. Base and SST trim shared the hardtop body, while the Go Package collected performance equipment around eligible V8 configurations. The two-seat AMX remained a separate model.

Engines and transmissions

The range began with the 232 inline-six and continued through 290 and 343 V8s. A late 390 path added 315 gross horsepower. Three-speed, four-speed, and Shift-Command automatic combinations required matching controls, cooling, and axle applications.

Packages and chassis

SST changed trim and cabin equipment. The Go Package could add performance induction, exhaust, suspension, brakes, wheels, tires, cooling, instruments, and stripes by application. Independent coil-spring front suspension and a leaf-spring live rear axle supported every Javelin.

Identity

Start with VIN, door tag, title, shell, and factory records. Reconcile engine, induction, transmission, axle, brakes, suspension, paint, upholstery, instruments, SST or Go Package trim, dates, and ownership history. Stripes, badges, a 390 swap, or AMX parts cannot prove original Javelin configuration.
