Story

1974 AMC Javelin AMX 401

The 1974 Javelin AMX was the last factory performance version of AMC's four-seat Javelin. The optional 401 Go Package paired AMC's largest V8 with the AMX body and was rated at 235 SAE net horsepower and 335 lb-ft of torque. Buyers could choose a Hurst-shifted Borg-Warner T-10 four-speed or the heavy-duty Torque-Command A727 three-speed automatic.

The final-year Go Package included the 401 four-barrel and dual exhaust, hood T-stripe, black rear panel, Rally-Pac instruments, heavy-duty cooling, handling package, Twin-Grip differential, power-assisted front discs, E60-15 raised-white-letter tires, 15-inch slot-style wheels, and a space-saver spare. Unlike the 1973 package, it did not include the functional cowl-induction hood. Front disc brakes, the mesh AMX grille, rear spoiler, engine-turned dash panel, high-back buckets, and 14-inch slot-style wheels were already standard AMX equipment.

AMC offered fifteen Javelin colors for 1974, with vinyl or optional vinyl-and-domino-cloth bucket-seat upholstery. The Pierre Cardin interior ended after 1973 and is not a 1974 factory path. American Motors built 27,696 Javelins for the final model year, including 4,980 AMXs; Hemmings reports that 776 of those AMXs carried the 401.

For an individual car, the 7479-8 AMX model code, Z-code 401 VIN evidence, engine tag and casting dates, transmission identity, axle tag, door-tag paint and trim codes, build sheet, window sticker, and original paperwork should agree. Stripes, spoilers, wheels, badges, or an installed 401 do not establish an original 401 Go Package by themselves.
