Story
1976 Chevrolet Corvette
The 1976 Corvette was a coupe-only two-seat C3 with removable roof panels and fixed rear glass. Chevrolet built 46,558, making it the highest-volume Corvette model year to that point. A unique hood, revised air intake, deleted rear-deck vents, and additional steel beneath the forward body are the year's clearest engineering and appearance changes.
Quieter airflow and a stronger floor
Chevrolet moved the engine air inlet forward over the radiator to reduce induction noise reaching the cabin. The rear-deck Astro Ventilation openings disappeared, and the model-year hood differs from the surrounding C3 years. A partial steel underbody was added beneath the forward cabin to increase rigidity and isolate heat. Those features help date a body, but replacement panels or a hood alone cannot authenticate an individual car.
Two 350 V8 choices
The standard L48 350 made 180 SAE net horsepower and 270 lb-ft. The optional L82 made 210 horsepower and 255 lb-ft and was not available in California. Chevrolet recorded 5,720 L82 orders. Subtracting those from total production implies 40,838 L48 installations, but that is arithmetic rather than a separately printed production row.
Transmission choices were a Warner wide-ratio four-speed, the M21 close-ratio four-speed, and M40 automatic paths. Chevrolet recorded 2,088 M21 and 36,625 M40 orders, leaving an implied 7,845 wide-ratio manuals. The identification table lists W for the four-speed, AM or XH for the L48 Turbo Hydra-Matic 350, and CZ for the L82 Turbo Hydra-Matic 400. Case, code, date, ratio, linkage, axle, and factory records still need to agree on a particular car.
Chassis and brakes
Every Corvette used independent front and rear suspension, four-wheel discs with 11.75-inch rotors, 15x8 wheels, GR70-15 radial tires, and a frame-mounted Positraction differential. The production table lists J50 power assist on all 46,558 cars and FE7 Gymkhana suspension on 5,368. YJ8 cast-aluminum wheels were ordered on 6,253 cars. Current suspension parts, wheel style, or stance do not establish factory FE7 or YJ8 equipment.
Production, colors, and cabin
Chevrolet built 46,558 coupes. The ten published paint rows total 46,549, nine fewer than total production, so the page preserves that small accounting difference rather than assigning it to a color.
The source lists eleven vinyl and leather trim codes, but publishes quantities for only seven. Those known rows total 41,010, leaving 5,548 cars across four unquantified trim codes or a remaining reconciliation difference. Power windows, air conditioning, tilt-telescopic steering, power steering, rear defogger, map light, and two AM/FM radio choices could make the compact cabin considerably more comfortable.
Identifying a real 1976
The VIN begins 1Z37 for the coupe. The fifth character identifies L for L48 or X for L82; the model-year character is 6 and the St. Louis plant character is S. The published range is 1Z37L6S400001 through 1Z37L6S446558 and reconciles to the 46,558-car total.
Engine suffixes CHC or CKC identify the published L82 manual or automatic contexts; CKW, CKX, and California CLS identify the published L48 contexts. Partial VIN, 3970010 block, 333882 heads, dates, Quadrajet, HEI distributor, transmission identification, axle code, emissions equipment, trim tag, build sheet, and other factory records should agree. An L82 badge, hood, wheel choice, paint, or current engine shows what is present now, not necessarily what left St. Louis.
Market context
The dated observations below include low-mile, long-owned, restored, and modified coupes, L48 and L82 configurations, manuals and automatics, completed sales and one reserve-not-met high bid. They are comparable examples rather than a price guide for an unseen car; condition, documentation, drivetrain, transmission, originality, and work quality all change the result.
