Story

1973 Chevrolet Corvette

The 1973 Corvette has a shape all its own. Chevrolet fitted a body-color urethane front bumper to meet new impact requirements while retaining the split chrome rear bumpers for one final year. That one-year combination makes a 1973 easy to recognize, but the important changes went deeper than the nose.

A quieter, more settled C3

The front bumper cover concealed an impact structure instead of hanging chrome ahead of the body. Chevrolet also removed the wiper door, added side-door beams, revised body mounts, increased sound insulation, adopted a coolant-recovery system, and made a cold-air induction hood standard. The coupe gained fixed rear glass. Standard radial tires were another Corvette first, improving straight-line stability and ride quality even as the safety and refinement changes added weight.

The result was less raw than the early shark cars but still unmistakably a C3: two seats, a fiberglass body, removable roof panels on the coupe, concealed headlamps, and a chassis built around independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes.

Three V8 personalities

Every 1973 Corvette used a four-barrel V8. The standard L48 350 was rated at 190 net horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. The new L82 350 raised output to 250 net horsepower and 285 lb-ft with higher compression and performance-oriented hardware. The LS4 454 delivered 275 net horsepower and 395 lb-ft, making 1973 the final model year for a factory big-block Corvette.

The standard wide-ratio four-speed, M21 close-ratio four-speed, and M40 Turbo Hydra-Matic covered the transmission choices. The option table records 3,704 M21 orders and 17,927 automatics. Subtracting those from total production implies 8,833 standard wide-ratio installations, but that figure is arithmetic rather than a separately printed factory row.

Z07 and the aluminum-wheel story

RPO Z07 grouped the off-road suspension and heavy-duty brake equipment for buyers who wanted the most serious chassis. Period testing described it as requiring the L82 or LS4, the M21 four-speed, and excluding air conditioning. Only 45 were ordered.

The cast-aluminum YJ8 wheel was advertised and priced, yet the production table records only four cars. Period reporting attributed the tiny total to porosity and air-leak problems. A 1973 wearing those wheels therefore needs much stronger support than appearance alone: factory paperwork, date-correct wheels, and a coherent car-specific history.

Body, paint, and cabin

Chevrolet built 30,464 Corvettes for the model year: 25,521 coupes and 4,943 convertibles. Ten regular paint codes are published, including Classic White, Silver, two blues, two greens, two yellows, Mille Miglia Red, and Orange. Public production references do not assign quantities to those colors. They also mention a small number of black cars without providing a factory-audited count, so black should be treated as a car-specific documentation question rather than a settled production statistic.

The two-seat cabin retained bucket seats, a full console, driver-facing speedometer and tachometer, and center auxiliary gauges. Vinyl and leather trim codes covered black, blue, saddle, and red families, but the surviving public table contains an ambiguity around code 425 and no quantities by trim code. Power windows, air conditioning, tilt-telescopic steering, power steering, rear defogger, map light, and AM/FM choices let buyers move the car from purposeful to well equipped.

Identifying a real 1973

The VIN begins 1Z37 for a coupe or 1Z67 for a convertible. The fifth character identifies the engine family: J for L48, T for L82, or Z for LS4. The model-year character is 3 and the St. Louis plant character is S. Because Chevrolet left a 4,000-number gap in the serial sequence, the final VIN ends in 434464 even though production totaled 30,464 cars.

Engine suffix, partial VIN, block and head castings, dates, carburetor, distributor, transmission identification, differential, trim tag, and factory documents should agree. Badges, hood shape, wheels, or a currently installed engine can describe what is on the car today, but they cannot establish how that individual Corvette left St. Louis.

Market context

Recent auction observations span project cars, restorations, modified examples, and restomods, so a single average would obscure more than it reveals. Condition, body style, L48/L82/LS4 configuration, transmission, documentation, originality, and the quality of prior work all matter. The dated observations below are best used as comparable examples, not as a price guide for an unseen car.

Still Researching

  • production Standard L48 and wide-ratio four-speed quantities are arithmetic residuals rather than separately printed production rows.
  • paint colors The regular paint codes are published without quantities, and the often-repeated small black-car count is not supported by an audited factory color ledger in the reviewed public sources.
  • interior Published references list trim codes without production quantities and contain an unresolved ambiguity around trim code 425.
  • authenticity markers The NCRS VIN-bound shipping and represented-document validation path is documented, but no reviewed public source provides a serial-bound roster of all four YJ8 cars, all 45 Z07 cars, or assembly windows for every drivetrain combination.
  • option packages The public tables do not fully enumerate package overlaps, every axle ratio by configuration, or all zero-price and emissions constraints.
