Story

1974 Chevrolet Corvette

The 1974 Corvette completed the C3's transition to body-color impact bumpers. Its urethane rear cover replaced the chrome bumpers retained in 1973, giving the coupe and convertible a cleaner tail while preserving the two-seat shark shape, concealed headlamps, removable coupe roof panels, independent suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes.

A new tail and the final big block

The rear bumper cover is the clearest model-year change, and the two-piece construction leaves a center seam that matters when inspecting an original-style body. Chevrolet also revised the radiator and moved the anti-theft alarm activator. Coupes gained integrated lap-and-shoulder belts; convertibles retained lap belts with separate shoulder belts available. This was the last Corvette model year before catalytic converters and the last with a factory big-block option.

Three V8 choices

The standard L48 350 made 195 SAE net horsepower and 275 lb-ft. The optional L82 350 raised output to 250 horsepower and 285 lb-ft. The LS4 454 delivered 270 horsepower and 380 lb-ft and closed the factory big-block Corvette era. Chevrolet recorded 6,690 L82 and 3,494 LS4 orders. Subtracting those from 37,502 total cars implies 27,318 L48 installations, but that is arithmetic rather than a separately printed production row.

Transmission choices were a standard wide-ratio four-speed, the M21 close-ratio four-speed, and the M40 Turbo Hydra-Matic. Chevrolet recorded 3,494 M21 and 25,146 M40 orders, leaving an implied 8,862 wide-ratio installations. Muncie and Borg-Warner Super T-10 four-speeds both appear in 1974 technical references, so the transmission type and date on a particular car must be checked rather than inferred from model year alone.

Chassis and Z07

Every Corvette used independent front and rear suspension, power-assisted four-wheel discs with 11.8-inch rotors, 15x8 wheels, GR70-15 tires, and Positraction. FE7 Gymkhana suspension was ordered on 1,905 cars. The much rarer Z07 off-road suspension and brake package appears on only 47. It required a compatible high-performance drivetrain and excluded air conditioning. Equipment or stance alone does not establish Z07 identity; paperwork and coherent chassis evidence are essential.

Production, colors, and cabin

Chevrolet built 37,502 cars: 32,028 coupes and 5,474 convertibles. The production table publishes ten paint codes, from Classic White and Silver Mist Metallic through Bright Yellow, Mille Miglia Red, and Corvette Orange Metallic, but not quantities by color.

Standard vinyl and optional leather trim covered black, silver, neutral, dark blue, saddle, and dark red paths. The published leather counts are 7,828 black, 2,797 silver, and 9,334 saddle, which reconcile to the 19,959 custom-interior total. Public references do not provide quantities for each vinyl color or for every listed trim code. Power windows, air conditioning, tilt-telescopic steering, power steering, rear defogger, map light, and two AM/FM radio choices could make the compact two-seat cabin considerably more comfortable.

Identifying a real 1974

The VIN begins 1Z37 for a coupe or 1Z67 for a convertible. The fifth character identifies J for L48, T for L82, or Z for LS4; the model-year character is 4 and the St. Louis plant character is S. The published sequence range reaches 440606, while production totals 37,502, so the serial range must not be treated as proof that every number was used.

Engine suffixes, partial VIN, block and head castings, dates, carburetor, distributor, transmission identification, differential, trim tag, build sheet, and other factory documents should agree. A 454 badge, hood, current engine, paint, or wheel choice describes what is visible today, not necessarily how an individual Corvette left St. Louis.

Market context

The dated observations below include stock-presenting, restored, and heavily modified cars, coupes and convertibles, small-block and LS4 configurations, completed sales and one reserve-not-met high bid. They are comparable examples rather than a price guide for an unseen car; condition, documentation, drivetrain, transmission, body style, originality, and work quality all change the result.

  • production Standard L48 and wide-ratio four-speed quantities are arithmetic residuals rather than separately printed production rows; the published VIN range also exceeds the 37,502-car total.
  • paint colors The ten regular paint codes are published without quantities.
  • interior Published references reconcile black, silver, and saddle leather counts to the custom-interior total but do not enumerate each vinyl, dark-blue, dark-red, neutral, or other trim-code quantity.
  • authenticity markers No reviewed public source provides a serial-bound roster of all 47 Z07 cars or exact assembly-transition windows for every Muncie and Borg-Warner application.
  • option packages The public tables do not fully enumerate every package overlap, exact transmission transition, axle ratio by individual car, or quantity for YF5, VK3, and Z12.
