The 1972 Chevrolet Nova SS 350 is the post-big-block Nova Super Sport: RPO Z26 Super Sport equipment with the L48 Turbo-Fire 350 as the SS engine path. NovaResource's Super Sport reference says 1972 Super Sport availability was the Nova coupe body with the 350 four-barrel L48, while its production page reports 12,309 1972 SS cars and 12,309 L48 350/200-hp engines. GMClassics' option table mirrors the same one-car mismatch, so the page keeps both counts source-specific instead of forcing them into a false exact match.
The important enthusiast distinction is that 1972 split the Nova market more sharply. The SS carried the L48 four-barrel V8 and SS chassis/trim equipment, while the new Rally Nova was an appearance-heavy package with different engine availability. For the SS, the source-backed equipment record includes special hood ornaments, black grille and rear-panel treatment, SS emblems, black steering wheel/shroud/column treatment, white-stripe E70-14-B tires on 14x7 rims, F40 heavy-duty suspension, optional F41 suspension, and power-assisted front disc brakes.
Authentication still requires more than badges. NovaResource warns that 1968 through 1972 Nova Super Sports cannot be verified by VIN or cowl tag alone; original paperwork or the original engine application evidence is needed. The cowl tag can support the 1972 Chevrolet Nova V8 two-door sedan body, paint, trim, assembly plant, and build-week details, but it does not prove the L48 SS drivetrain by itself.
