Story

The 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS 350 combines two separate factory ideas: Rally Sport appearance equipment and the Super Sport L48 performance package. Rally Sport was not an engine claim. It brought the hidden-headlamp grille, revised rear lamp treatment, backup lamps below the bumper, RS badging, and bright exterior trim. The SS 350 identity comes from the Super Sport path with the L48 350-cubic-inch small-block, not from RS trim or badges alone.

Camaro Research Group's 1968 visual-identification table is the strongest public boundary for this page. It lists the SS L48 column as a 350/295 hp QuadraJet small-block with SS 350 emblems, D91 early or D90 late striping, the SS hood, 14x6 wheels, F70x14 red-line tires, dual exhaust, and transmission-specific driveline rows. CRG's engine report records 12,496 1968 Camaro L48 engines, which is the page's production anchor. The page does not claim a safe RS-plus-SS 350 production cross-tab because the checked sources do not provide one.

The 1968 chassis details are more nuanced than many buyer guides suggest. CRG lists M15, M13, M20, and M35 transmission coverage for SS L48 cars. The axle row is transmission-dependent: M15 and M35 coverage points to 10-bolt context, while M20 coverage points to 12-bolt context. Front brakes are listed as drum or optional disc for SS L48, not disc-only. That is different from later 1969 SS L48 coverage and keeps this page from importing the wrong model-year assumptions.

Authentication for a 1968 RS/SS 350 is paperwork-and-stamping work. CRG notes that 1968 cowl tags do not carry drivetrain option information, so a tag alone cannot prove SS, RS, or L48 identity. A real check needs the VIN and body style, engine assembly pad and partial VIN evidence, transmission and axle stamps, paint and trim tags, Protect-O-Plate or build-sheet paperwork where present, and a careful separation of RS appearance hardware from SS drivetrain claims. The gallery uses exact-year RS/SS and SS 350 photos as visual context only; it does not turn representative images into proof for an individual car.
