1970 Ford Torino Cobra 429 Cobra Jet

The 1970 Torino Cobra was Ford's stripped-down SportsRoof performance model. Its standard engine was the 360 hp 429 Thunder Jet; this page covers the optional 429 Cobra Jet path, rated at 370 gross hp and 450 lb-ft. The non-Ram-Air C-code and Ram Air J-code belong together as documented Cobra Jet configurations, while the Drag Pack changed the engine and axle package enough to require the separate Super Cobra Jet record.

Reviewed references support a close-ratio four-speed with Hurst shifter and an optional C6 SelectShift automatic. Competition suspension, a flat-black hood and grille, exposed twist latches, Cobra graphics, and F70-14 tires define the broader Cobra package. Optional brakes, wheels, axle ratios, paint, and trim still require the individual warranty plate, build sheet, invoice, or Marti report.

Hemmings reports 7,675 Torino Cobras across all engine configurations. That is not a 429 Cobra Jet total, and the broader 230,411 Torino model-line figure is not Cobra production. No reviewed source here resolves CJ production by C/J code, transmission, axle, paint, or trim, so those rarity claims remain open.

A body code identifying the Cobra SportsRoof and a C or J engine code establish the starting identity. Ram Air hardware does not prove a J-code car, and a shaker, 429 badges, 3.91 or 4.30 gears, or later engine parts do not prove Drag Pack/Super Cobra Jet status.
