Story

1969 Ford Torino Cobra 428 Cobra Jet

Ford's 1969 intermediate performance model was marketed simply as the Cobra, without Torino or Fairlane nameplates on the car. “Torino Cobra” remains a familiar search and reference name, but the distinction matters when comparing it with the more upscale Torino GT. The Cobra used a plainer interior and trim strategy around the standard 428 Cobra Jet and was offered as a SportsRoof or two-door hardtop.

Reviewed Ford material rates the 428 Cobra Jet at 335 hp and 440 lb-ft and supports four-speed manual and SelectShift automatic paths. Ram Air and non-Ram-Air installations existed, while Drag Pack/Super Cobra Jet equipment is a separate configuration that should not be inferred from a scoop, 428 emblems, axle ratio, or later-installed parts.

Ford did not publish a clean Cobra total in the reviewed material, and no body/transmission/engine production ledger is attached here. Body-code aliases establish the SportsRoof and hardtop pathways but not quantities. Exact rarity claims need a licensed Marti statistical report or equivalent Ford record.

Authenticity starts with the warranty plate, VIN, build sheet or Marti report, and matching body, engine, transmission, axle, paint, and trim records. Cobra badges, hood treatment, stripes, an installed 428, or a seller description cannot establish factory identity by themselves.
