1971 Ford Torino GT 429 Cobra Jet

The 1971 Torino GT was a separate model from the Torino Cobra. Ford identified the GT SportsRoof with body serial code 35 and the GT convertible with code 37; code 38 belonged to the Torino Cobra. The 429 Cobra Jet was an available GT powertrain, so Cobra Jet engine evidence does not turn a GT into a Torino Cobra.

Reviewed Ford and Torino references list the 429 Cobra Jet at 370 gross horsepower, 450 lb-ft of torque, 11.3:1 compression, and four-barrel carburetion. The 1971 decoder separates the C-code 429 Cobra Jet from the J-code Ram-Air 429 Cobra Jet. A four-speed manual and C6 automatic were available paths, but an individual car still needs its invoice, build sheet, Marti report, tags, and date codes to establish the exact combination.

Ford-Torino.de reports 31,641 Torino GT fastbacks and 1,613 Torino GT convertibles for 1971. Those are all-engine body totals, not 429 Cobra Jet production. No reviewed source in this pass establishes a GT 429 CJ total by body, transmission, axle, paint, trim, or plant.
