Story

1970 Dodge Challenger T/A 340 Six Pack

The 1970 Challenger T/A was Dodge's factory Trans-Am-themed E-body hardtop, sold through the normal Dodge ordering system rather than as a dealer conversion. The safest identity shorthand is the source language: Challenger T/A, Trans Am package, and 340 Six Pack. Registry and option-code sources point to the JH23 hardtop body with the A53 Trans Am package and the T/A-only J-code 340 Six Pack engine.

Its street package centered on the 340-cubic-inch small-block with three two-barrel carburetors, factory rated at 290 gross horsepower. Buyers could pair it with the A833 four-speed manual or the TorqueFlite automatic. Chassis references consistently tie the package to power front disc brakes, heavy-duty/rallye suspension, front and rear sway bars, 15-inch staggered E60/G60 tires, side-exit exhaust, a fresh-air fiberglass hood, rear spoiler, T/A striping, and an 8 3/4-inch Sure Grip axle with 3.55 gearing listed as the normal package axle and 3.91 as an optional ratio in the option-code reference.

Production is best treated conservatively: the commonly cited T/A total is 2,399 cars, split by transmission as 1,410 or 1,411 automatics and 989 four-speeds depending on the reference. This page records the discrepancy rather than forcing a single unsupported number. For authentication, source-backed review should start with the JH23J0B VIN pattern, A53 package evidence on factory paperwork or tags, and serial-numbered drivetrain stampings; captions, badges, auction descriptions, and file names are not enough to prove a real T/A.
