Story

1967 Plymouth GTX 426 Hemi

Plymouth introduced the GTX for 1967 as its premium intermediate performance car. The 440 Super Commando was standard, while the 426 Street Hemi was the rare, expensive alternative: 425 horsepower, 490 lb-ft, two four-barrel carburetors, and 10.25:1 compression.

Hemi buyers could pair the engine with a floor-shifted A833 four-speed or TorqueFlite automatic. The factory performance brochure identifies the heavy-duty 8.75-inch rear axle with the automatic and the 9.75-inch Dana 60 with the four-speed. GTX suspension used heavier torsion bars and rear springs with a front anti-sway bar; enlarged drums were standard and front discs were optional.

The first-year GTX mixed that hardware with bucket seats, a 150-mph speedometer, simulated hood scoops, a blacked-out grille, an argent tail panel, GTX badges, and a flip-open fuel cap. Hardtop and convertible bodies were offered, with optional console, tachometer, sport stripes, vinyl roof, road wheels, and a broad paint and interior palette.

The cited Chrysler-record summary reports 733 U.S.-spec Hemi GTX hardtops and convertibles; a separate period-car account reports 312 four-speed cars. Other published totals conflict, so body-style and complete transmission splits remain open research items rather than false precision.

Authentication starts with an RS23J7 hardtop or RS27J7 convertible VIN pattern and agreement among the VIN, fender tag, broadcast sheet, engine and transmission stampings, axle, paint, trim, and options. GTX trim or an installed Hemi cannot establish an original Hemi GTX by itself.

Market Observations

  • High bid $53,000

    Feb 5, 2025 · Bring a Trailer

Factory Hemi GTX hardtop RS23J71116774 with a 478ci Hemi and TCI automatic transmission installed in 2017. · modified · unknown The high bid did not meet reserve and is not a sale. The archive and decoded trim tag support factory J-code automatic context, while the installed 478ci engine, replacement transmission, repaint, and other alterations require modified classification. Auction-catalog identity is reported rather than treated as a fresh inspection by this project.
  • Auction sale $42,250

Factory Hemi GTX hardtop RS23J71134560 with a replacement 426 Hemi and replacement four-speed transmission. · modified · project Winning-bid observation. The archive identifies a factory Hemi-powered car but documents a period replacement engine block, replacement transmission, paint failure, body filler, weathering, and underside rust. It is classified as a modified project rather than an original or restored benchmark.
  • Auction sale $126,500
