Story
1967 Mercury Cyclone GT
The 1967 Cyclone GT put Mercury's 320-horsepower Marauder 390 four-barrel into the 116-inch-wheelbase Cyclone hardtop or convertible. Both bodies belong here, as do the standard heavy-duty three-speed, optional four-speed, and optional Select-Shift Merc-O-Matic. They are configurations of one factory GT, not separate cars.
The GT Performance Group was more than an engine and badges. Mercury included a twin-scoop hood, dual exhaust, contrasting rally stripes, GT plaques, 14 x 5.5-inch wheels with Wide Oval tires, power-assisted front disc brakes, a 3.25 rear axle, and stiffer springs, heavy-duty shocks, and a larger front stabilizer bar. Inside, bucket seats, a black camera-case instrument panel, special door trim, a wood-grain steering wheel, and GT ornamentation carried the performance theme into the cabin.
Authentication requires the complete record set. Factory material identifies 63H hardtop and 76H convertible body styles, an S-code 390 four-barrel, transmission and axle codes, and the GT equipment group. A preliminary body-serial table conflicts with VINs published for several claimed GT market cars, so no single VIN field, hood, stripe, plaque, wheel, or replacement 390 should settle the question. Reconcile the data plate, invoice or build report, drivetrain identifiers and dates, paint and trim, and the physical package before calling an individual car a factory GT.
