Story

1973 Dodge Dart Sport 340

The Dart Sport replaced the Demon name for 1973, and the Dart Sport 340 carried Dodge's compact performance formula into the new model year. Its H-code 340 four-barrel LA V8 was rated at 240 net horsepower and paired with a floor-shifted three-speed manual, optional A833 four-speed, or optional TorqueFlite automatic.

Factory equipment gave the 340 model more than an engine badge. The dealer data book lists heavy-duty front and rear suspension with a front sway bar, power-assisted front-disc/rear-drum brakes, E70-14 tires, a body-side stripe, and 340 and Sport identification. Hood scoops, an up-and-over stripe, bucket seats, a console, sunroof, and folding rear seat were among the available choices.

The factory axle chart specifies a semi-floating hypoid rear axle with a 3.23 standard ratio. Sure-Grip could be ordered with 3.23 or 3.55 gearing across the documented three-speed, four-speed, and automatic paths. The cited production reference reports 11,315 Dart Sport 340 coupes; that total remains source-reported pending factory-ledger reconciliation.

Authentication starts with the LM29H3 VIN pattern and agreement among the fender tag, broadcast sheet, engine and transmission stampings, axle evidence, paint, trim, and options. A 340 badge, hood treatment, stripe, or later engine installation cannot establish original factory identity by itself.
