Story

1970 Plymouth 'Cuda 340

Plymouth introduced the E-body Barracuda for 1970 and reserved the 'Cuda name for its performance model. The available E55 340 four-barrel combined the lighter LA-series small-block with the 'Cuda's heavy-duty suspension, dual-scooped hood, bucket-seat cabin, and performance trim. It was distinct from the limited-production AAR, which used three two-barrel carburetors and its own hood, exhaust, stripes, and chassis tuning.

Factory and period references rate the regular 340 four-barrel at 275 gross horsepower and 340 lb-ft. Buyers could pair it with a floor-shifted three-speed manual, an A833 four-speed, or a TorqueFlite automatic. The 8 3/4-inch rear axle was typical, while ratio and Sure-Grip equipment depended on the original order.

The cited production reference reports 6,032 hardtops and 262 convertibles with the 340 four-barrel, for 6,294 cars across both body styles. Those figures remain attributed to that secondary production table rather than presented as a surviving Chrysler ledger.

Sixteen documented 1970 E-body finishes are listed with the available stripe, hood, bumper, wheel, and cabin choices. A real car's original combination still has to agree with its fender tag, broadcast sheet, hidden paint, trim codes, and restoration history.

For authentication, start with the H engine character in the VIN and E55 on the fender tag, then reconcile the body stampings, broadcast sheet, engine and transmission stampings, axle details, paint, interior, and options. A 340 installation, hood treatment, or stripe alone does not establish factory identity.

Still Researching

  • engine Core 340 specifications, AMA carburetor list numbers, and AMA distributor applications for 340 manual and automatic cars are recorded, but complete casting numbers, component part-number tables, and engine assembly/date-code tables are not.
  • transmission The three factory transmission paths are recorded, but complete ratios, assembly numbers, and date windows are not.
  • rear axle Factory AMA powerteams evidence documents 3.23, 3.55, and 3.91 axle-ratio availability for the 1970 Barracuda/Cuda 340 and identifies Sure-Grip-only status for the 3.55 and 3.91 applications; the original axle in a specific car still requires its order records, axle tag, stampings, and date codes.
  • brakes Standard drum and optional front-disc dimensions are recorded, but complete option and part-number applications are not.
  • suspension Heavy-duty suspension is recorded, but complete torsion-bar, spring, shock, and stabilizer applications are not.
  • option packages Factory ordering-code guide evidence now resolves additional option-code names, selected model/engine availability notes, and several Cuda 340-relevant package contents, but the complete model-year compatibility and price matrix remains incomplete because the guide itself notes it is not a complete list of options introduced through the model year and it does not normalize prices.
  • production Body-style totals are secondary-source figures and are not reconciled to a surviving Chrysler ledger.
  • paint colors The model-year palette is recorded, but color frequencies and individual-car combinations remain incomplete.
  • trim and appearance Standard and optional factory-documented stripes, wheels, hoods, bumpers, and molding combinations from the ordering guides are now resolved, but an individual car's original equipment combinations still require car-specific build sheet or fender tag verification.
  • interior Seat, console, gauge, and trim context is recorded, but the complete upholstery-code matrix is not.
  • authenticity markers VIN, tag, and 1970 Hamtramck body/engine/transmission stamping locations are recorded; acceptable date windows and car-specific paperwork or physical inspection remain unresolved.
