Story

The 1968 Dodge Dart GTS put the new 340 four-barrel in Dodge's compact A-body and kept the 383 four-barrel as its only factory engine option. Both engines belong on this model-year page. The dealer-built Mr. Norm's GSS 440, the Hurst-built LO23 Hemi Dart and the 1969 factory 440 GTS remain separate cars with different build pathways.

Dodge sold the GTS as a two-door hardtop or convertible. The 275-hp 340 was standard; the 300-hp 383 cost $35.40. A column-shifted TorqueFlite was standard, while the floor-shifted A-833 four-speed was a no-charge alternative. Buyers could add a console to bucket-seat cars, and an automatic ordered with a console moved its selector to the floor. Power steering and air conditioning were unavailable with the tightly packaged 383.

Rallye suspension, firm-ride shocks and E70-14 red- or white-sidewall tires were standard. Dodge's factory performance brochure describes heavy-duty torsion bars, rear springs, shocks and front sway bar, plus an extra right-rear leaf. Standard V8 brakes used 10-inch drums; optional front discs required 14-inch wheels. The standard 3.23 axle and optional ratios must be checked against a car's records, and Sure-Grip was extra-cost.

Hardtops came with vinyl bucket seats, while convertibles used a split-back bench unless buckets were ordered. Dodge documented 17 regular paint colors, detailed GTS upholstery codes, a deletable color-keyed side stripe and a no-cost black, red or white Bumble Bee tail stripe. The dual-nacelle hood, GTS emblems and exposed exhaust tips are useful visual checks but are not proof by themselves.

The GTS Registry reports 8,745 cars, then publishes engine, body and transmission rows that do not fully reconcile to that total. This page preserves those figures as reported instead of manufacturing a clean total. Authenticate an individual car with its LS23 hardtop or LS27 convertible VIN, P-code 340 or H-code 383 identity, fender tag, broadcast sheet, drivetrain identifiers, dates and surviving finishes.
