Story

1965 Plymouth Satellite

Plymouth introduced the Satellite for 1965 as the premium member of the Belvedere line. It came only as a two-door hardtop or convertible, with bucket seats, a center console, all-vinyl trim, full wheel covers, and Satellite-specific exterior brightwork as standard equipment. Those two bodies and every documented engine choice belong on this one model-year page.

The standard 273 V8 could be replaced by a 318, 361 Commando, 383 Commando, or 426 Street Wedge. The 426 was the 365-hp wedge street engine, not the lightweight A990 Race Hemi package. A column-shift three-speed was standard, TorqueFlite was optional, and the A833 four-speed was available with the 361, 383, and 426. Rear gearing and Sure-Grip availability varied with the selected power team.

Unit construction paired torsion-bar independent front suspension with longitudinal rear leaf springs. Most configurations used 10-inch drums, while the factory AMA schedule gives the 426 larger 11-inch drums and heavier spring equipment. Individual cars still need their VIN, body tag, axle and transmission identifiers, dates, and records checked together.

Plymouth built 23,341 Satellite hardtops and 1,860 convertibles. This page keeps body, engine, transmission, axle, brake, suspension, paint, trim, interior, pricing, production, and identification evidence together without treating the 426 option as a separate model.

Still Researching

  • engine Factory specifications establish all engine paths, and the exact-year parts catalog now establishes engine type codes, stamp examples, date-built format, pad locations, and the blank-boss replacement-engine boundary; complete casting and component-date matrices remain unresolved, and the catalog's 426 compression labels conflict with the Satellite AMA.
  • production Body totals are supported, but factory engine-by-transmission production splits were not found in the reviewed records.
  • paint colors All 15 solid colors and interior families are documented, but the full 19-pair split-level combination matrix has not been transcribed.
