Story
The 1965 Dodge Coronet A990 was a factory-built Super Stock race car, not a street-performance trim. Dodge paired the high-compression 426 Race Hemi with a lightened W051 two-door sedan. This page covers both factory transmission paths while keeping the radically altered A/FX Coronets separate.
A purpose-built Super Stock Dodge
The A990 engine used 12.5:1 compression and a 425-gross-horsepower rating. Its magnesium cross-ram intake, dual Holley four-barrels, aluminum cylinder heads and other lightweight housings reduced mass high in the car. Buyers could specify an A833 four-speed or a competition-prepared TorqueFlite. Dodge's heritage record reports 101 cars; the reviewed sources do not establish a complete transmission census.
Less steel, fewer comforts
NHRA rules ended the earlier use of aluminum exterior panels, so Dodge chemically milled the steel hood, fenders, doors and front bumper. Thin Corning glass, A100 bucket seats, one windshield wiper, two headlamps and extensive passenger-equipment deletes reduced more weight. The medium-duty torsion-bar front suspension omitted an anti-roll bar and used lightweight 10-inch front drums. The rear remains documented only as an unassisted hydraulic drum setup: the broad factory 426 table conflicts with the package-specific front-brake evidence, so the rear diameter and lining schedule require an original-car inspection.
Keep A990 and A/FX separate
RM lists the restored Super Stock car at 117 inches, while one exact-car feature reports a rear-axle relocation and a 115-inch measurement. The conflict remains visible pending factory engineering records. Both descriptions are distinct from the six Dodge A/FX cars, whose axles were moved radically forward to a 110-inch wheelbase.
Authenticate the whole car
The W051 identity, A990 paperwork, scheduled production record or IBM card, engine and transmission evidence, chemically milled steel, Corning glass, sparse interior, paint and race history should agree. A Hemi, scoop, two-headlamp grille or period-style lettering cannot establish an original A990 by itself.
