Story
1957 Dodge Coronet
The Coronet was Dodge's entry full-size series for 1957. Its two- and four-door sedans, two- and four-door Lancer hardtops, and Lancer convertible belong on one model-year family page. Royal, Custom Royal, and the separately named station-wagon series are not silently merged here.
Six through D-501
The two sedans could use the 138-hp Get-Away Six. Regular V8 cars used the 245-hp two-barrel Red Ram or optional 260-hp four-barrel Power Package. D-500 raised the 325 Hemi to 285 hp with one four-barrel or 310 hp with dual four-barrels. The 340-hp 354 D-501 was restricted to the Coronet Club Sedan and requires its own serial and heavy-duty component evidence.
Transmissions, chassis, and brakes
A three-speed manual was standard. PowerFlite served regular engine paths, while TorqueFlite was available with V8 applications. The 122-inch chassis combined Torsion-Aire independent front suspension with a leaf-spring live rear axle and 11-inch Center-Plane drums; power assist and performance-duty parts were optional or configuration-specific.
Body, color, and proof
D-72 identifies six-cylinder Coronet sedans and D-66 identifies regular Coronet V8 applications in the reviewed AMA sheet. Start with the door-pillar serial plate, title, shell, and ownership history, then reconcile engine architecture, induction, transmission, axle ratio, brakes, suspension, paint code, interior, options, and dates. Badges, carburetors, fins, or current paint do not prove D-500 or D-501 identity.
Production and price boundaries
One compiled table reports a rounded 160,500-car Coronet total and body-specific base prices from $2,335 to $2,807. Other secondary compilations differ on the total, and individual body production was not published in that table. Those figures are model-level context, not proof of one car's delivered price or rarity.
