Story
1959 Chevrolet Corvette
The 1959 Corvette refined the bold 1958 body instead of replacing it. Chevrolet retained the fiberglass roadster, quad headlamps, toothy grille, body-side coves, and split bumpers, but removed the nonfunctional hood louvers and twin chrome trunk spears. Production reached 9,670 cars.
Every 1959 Corvette used a 283-cubic-inch small-block V8. The standard single-four-barrel version produced 230 gross horsepower. Optional dual Carter four-barrels produced 245 horsepower with hydraulic lifters or 270 with a high-lift mechanical-lifter camshaft. Rochester fuel injection produced 250 horsepower with hydraulic lifters or 290 with 10.5:1 compression and mechanical lifters.
A three-speed manual was standard, while Powerglide and a close-ratio four-speed were optional. Chevrolet added a T-handle reverse lockout to the four-speed shifter. The standard rear axle ratio was 3.70:1, with Positraction offered in 3.70, 4.11, and 4.56 ratios. New upper radius rods better controlled the live rear axle.
Four-wheel 11-inch hydraulic drum brakes remained standard. For 1959, RPO 686 made heavy-duty metallic linings available separately, while RPO 684 combined heavy-duty suspension and brake equipment for cars with the 270- or 290-horsepower engine and a manual transmission.
The two-seat cabin gained recontoured seats and door panels, concave gauge lenses, and a package tray below the passenger grab bar. Black joined blue, red, and turquoise as an interior color. Buyers could add a removable hardtop, power folding top, power windows, heater, signal-seeking AM radio, sunshades, and other equipment.
Seven primary exterior colors were recorded, plus the RPO 527B Silver/White combination. Published single-color totals add to 9,582, leaving 88 cars unassigned in the public table; that difference is retained as an evidence gap. The public record also gives no price or production total for the optional 24-gallon tank.
Authentication starts with the J59S serial sequence and then checks engine suffix, block and head castings, induction system, distributor, transmission and axle codes, dates, trim, and documentation as one coherent assembly. The clean hood, clean trunk, four-speed lockout, and rear radius rods help distinguish 1959 equipment, but none proves an individual car's original configuration by appearance alone.
