1957 Chevrolet Corvette
The 1957 Corvette kept the clean single-headlamp body introduced for 1956, but its mechanical menu changed substantially. Every production car was a two-seat fiberglass convertible on a 102-inch wheelbase. Chevrolet enlarged the small-block V8 to 283 cubic inches and let buyers choose among a four-barrel, twin-four-barrel, or Rochester Ramjet fuel-injected engine. The five documented output levels ran from 220 to 283 gross horsepower.
Those engines were configurations of one Corvette model-year family, not separate models. The 220-horsepower four-barrel was the base engine. RPO 469A and 469C added twin four-barrels at 245 and 270 horsepower. The fuel-injected 579A/579C combinations produced 250 horsepower, while 579B/579E were advertised at one horsepower per cubic inch. The 270- and 283-horsepower engines used the maximum-performance camshaft, high-speed valve gear, and mechanical lifters; lower-output combinations used hydraulic lifters.
The transmission story also changed during the year. A close-ratio three-speed manual was the no-charge baseline, Powerglide remained optional, and RPO 685 introduced a four-speed manual after production was underway. Positraction axle choices covered 3.70, 4.11, and 4.56 ratios. For competition use, RPO 684 bundled special springs and shocks, a heavier front stabilizer, quick steering, metallic brake linings, finned drums, and brake-cooling hardware. Only 51 cars received that package, so those components should never be inferred from fuel-injection emblems or racing presentation alone.
Chevrolet built 6,339 Corvettes for 1957. Exterior choices included Polo White, Onyx Black, Aztec Copper, Cascade Green, Arctic Blue, Venetian Red, and Inca Silver, with optional contrasting coves. Buyers could add a removable hardtop, a power-operated soft top, power windows, heater, signal-seeking AM radio, courtesy lights, parking-brake warning, washers, wide whitewalls, and other equipment. The cabin retained two bucket seats, a driver-facing instrument group, and a floor shifter; exact upholstery, top, cove, and control details must match the car's documented configuration.
Authentication starts with the serial and fiberglass body evidence, then works through component dates, engine assembly stamping and induction, transmission, axle ratio, RPO 684 hardware when claimed, original finish layers, dated glass, tops, emblems, grille, wheels, tires, and cabin trim. Fuel Injection scripts, a Rochester unit, a four-speed, paint, or race equipment can be added during restoration. They are useful inspection clues, not substitutes for ownership records, factory documentation, and coherent date-correct hardware.
