Story
1986 Chevrolet Corvette
The 1986 Corvette family combined two-door hatchback coupe or convertible with coupe, convertible, Z51 coupe, Z52 coupe configurations. This page keeps those factory choices together without treating an engine, stripe, badge, or trim package as a separate car identity.
Engines and transmissions
Every 1986 Corvette used the L98 Tuned Port V8, but transmission, axle, cooling, suspension, wheels, tires, roof or convertible body, and production date define the configuration. Z51 and Z52 are not inferred from stance or wheels. Transmission, induction, cooling, exhaust, axle, emissions equipment, and dates must match the selected engine path.
Chassis and brakes
The C4 used composite transverse springs with independent suspension at both ends. Four-wheel anti-lock braking became standard, while Z51 and Z52 changed springs, bars, steering, cooling, wheels, and tires. Brake, steering, spring, damper, axle, ratio, wheel, and tire equipment varied by configuration and must be reconciled to factory and car-specific records.
Body, trim, and proof
Start with VIN or serial, body tag, title, shell, and ownership history. Then reconcile drivetrain, chassis, protected finish, cabin, trim, dates, and records. Replaceable badges, stripes, wheels, or a swapped engine cannot establish factory configuration.
