1985 Ford Mustang GT
The 1985 Mustang GT came as a three-door hatchback or two-door convertible. Both bodies and both regular-production 5.0 H.O. transmission paths belong on one model-year family page. The LX, intercooled SVO, Saleen conversion, dealer promotions, and other model years remain separate identities rather than duplicate GT configurations.
The last carbureted 5.0 GT
With the five-speed manual, the 5.0 H.O. used a four-barrel carburetor, roller tappets, revised heads and exhaust, and was rated at 210 net horsepower and 270 lb-ft. The AOD automatic required Central Fuel Injection. Reviewed references preserve the running-year automatic rating boundary: early material reports 165 hp and 245 lb-ft, while later production is reported at 180 hp and 260 lb-ft. Build date, emissions label, calibration, induction, transmission, axle, and records must agree before selecting one path.
Quadra-Shock chassis
The GT used the Fox platform's strut front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and four-link coil-spring live rear axle. Ford added two horizontal axle dampers to control wheel hop, creating the Quadra-Shock arrangement. A 7.5-inch Traction-Lok axle used a 3.08 ratio with the manual and 3.27 with the automatic. Power front discs and rear drums were standard GT equipment; TRX metric wheels, tires, and matched suspension equipment remained optional.
GT body and cabin
The revised four-headlamp nose, air dam, fog lamps, charcoal hood graphic, blackout trim, rear spoiler, 5.0 and GT identification, and cast-aluminum wheels define the stock-presenting visual baseline. Inside, articulated sport seats, full instruments, console, and transmission-specific controls distinguish the GT equipment. Six reviewed GT exterior colors still require certification-label, protected-finish, body, roof, trim, and build-date evidence on an individual car.
Production, price, and proof
Compiled body rows report 36,879 GT hatchbacks and 5,549 GT convertibles, totaling 42,428. They do not reveal manual versus automatic, paint, trim, option, plant, date, export, or survivor intersections. Reported base prices were $9,449 for the hatchback and $13,585 for the convertible before destination and options.
