Story
1984 Ford Mustang GT
For 1984, Ford sold the Mustang GT and Turbo GT as hatchbacks and convertibles. This page keeps those bodies, all three power teams, and the 20th Anniversary GT350 appearance package together as one model-year family instead of creating near-duplicate car pages. The SVO, Saleen, ordinary LX, and other years remain separate.
Three power teams
The carbureted 5.0 H.O. V8 made 175 net horsepower and used a five-speed manual with a 3.08 Traction-Lok axle. The 165-hp central-fuel-injection 5.0 used the AOD automatic and a 3.27 axle. The 145-hp, non-intercooled 2.3 Turbo used a five-speed and 3.45 axle. The intercooled 175-hp four belonged to the separate SVO, so an SVO engine or body cue is not Turbo GT evidence.
GT chassis and bodies
Both body styles used the Fox platform's strut front and four-link coil-spring live rear suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, front discs, rear drums, and GT axle-control hardware. The hatchback offered a split-folding rear seat, open roof, or T-roof; the convertible used a power top with roll-down rear quarter windows and zip-down rear glass. TRX metric wheels and tires were optional.
Appearance and anniversary package
The GT treatment included an air dam, fog lamps, blackout details, rear spoiler, full instruments, console, reclining bucket seats, and cast-aluminum wheels. Ford's 20th Anniversary GT350 was an Oxford White and Canyon Red appearance package with red graphics, available across selected GT bodies and power teams. It was not a Shelby conversion, and graphics alone do not prove the package.
Production, price, and proof
Compiled references report 36,886 combined GT and Turbo GT cars: 30,630 hatchbacks and 6,256 convertibles. A separate cross-section reports 32,914 5.0 GTs and 3,972 Turbo GTs; those dimensions overlap and must never be added together. Reported base prices were $9,774 and $13,274 for 5.0 hatchback and convertible, and $9,958 and $13,441 for Turbo GT hatchback and convertible.
