1977 Pontiac Can Am
Pontiac gave its final full-size LeMans Sport Coupe a focused performance package instead of another badge-only sendoff. Every Can Am began as a Cameo White Sport Coupe with the Grand Prix instrument panel, Rally RTS chassis, power front discs, a shaker hood, and a three-speed automatic. Pontiac then sent the cars to Motortown Corporation for the spoiler, black lower-body treatment, stripes, and Can Am identification.
Two factory 6.6-liter configurations
Most cars used Pontiac's 200-net-hp W72 400, identified on the shaker as T/A 6.6 and paired with a Turbo Hydra-Matic 400. Cars assigned to California and specified high-altitude markets received the emissions-certified Oldsmobile L80 403 with 6.6 Litre shaker identification and a Turbo Hydra-Matic 350. Both belong on this page: they were regional configurations of the same factory-authorized Can Am package, not separate models.
Built in two places
Pontiac assembled the LeMans-based cars with their mechanical package and Grand Prix cabin hardware. Motortown cut the hood for the shaker, installed the three-piece rear spoiler, applied the tri-tone graphics and Can Am markings, and returned completed cars to Pontiac for dealer distribution. This authorized completion path is also why loose spoilers, stripes, or shaker parts cannot authenticate a car by themselves.
Chassis and cabin
The Can Am package included variable-ratio power steering, front and rear stabilizer bars, GR70-15 steel-belted radials, body-color 15x7 Rally II wheels, and power-assisted front disc/rear drum brakes. Inside, the Grand Prix-style woodgrain instrument panel and Rally gauges distinguished it from a normal LeMans Sport Coupe. Black, white, and Firethorn trim were documented choices, with an additional white-seat/Firethorn combination.
What to verify
A genuine car should first match the LeMans Sport Coupe body, Cameo White code 11, correct engine-market configuration, Grand Prix instrument panel, chassis equipment, shaker identification, and Motortown appearance pieces. Pontiac Historic Services billing history or equivalent original paperwork is the decisive check. A white LeMans carrying reproduction stripes and a spoiler remains a tribute unless its factory record supports Can Am equipment.
Production was brief. Published totals disagree at 1,133 and 1,377, while the dated Hagerty record and several later references use 1,377. This page retains that disagreement rather than presenting the lower recollection as a second production category.
