Story

1973 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454

The 1973 Chevelle SS 454 sits at the far edge of the original Chevelle SS story. Chevrolet moved the Chevelle onto the new Colonnade body, kept the SS as a Malibu-series option, and still allowed the 454 big-block path even as emissions rules, insurance pressure, safety bumpers, and fuel costs had changed the muscle-car market.

The safest public identity is a 1973 Malibu SS ordered with the LS4 454 four-barrel V8. Checked references describe the 454 at 245 net horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque, with four-speed manual or Turbo Hydra-Matic availability in SS context. Public production context reports 28,647 Chevelle Malibu SS option orders and 2,500 of those with the 454, while wagon-specific 454 counts are treated as a separate rarity note rather than applied to every SS.

This page therefore treats photos and badges as context, not proof. A real SS454 claim needs Z15/SS evidence, LS4 engine evidence, transmission and axle decoding, trim-tag support, and documentation that matches the body style. That boundary matters because 1973 SS trim, wheels, stripes, and emblems are easy to recreate, while an original 454 Colonnade Chevelle is a much narrower claim.
