Story
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye
The Challenger Rallye replaced the R/T as Dodge's named performance model for 1972. It was a single two-door hardtop identity with a standard 318 two-barrel V8 and an optional 340 four-barrel. Keeping both engines on this page preserves the way Dodge sold the car and avoids turning an engine choice into a duplicate model.
The Rallye was easy to spot when complete: a black grille and lower rear panel, a sport hood, simulated fender scoops, strobe-style side stripes, and a full instrument cluster with a 150-mph speedometer and tachometer. The 340 added 240 net horsepower, dual exhaust, electronic ignition, larger front torsion bars, a rear sway bar, and access to the four-speed manual. TorqueFlite remained available with either engine, while axle ratios followed the selected powertrain.
Those visible details are useful context, not proof. A factory Rallye should have a JS23 VIN with the correct G- or H-code engine digit, supported by its fender tag, broadcast sheet, body stamps, drivetrain stamps, and original paperwork. Later hoods, stripes, scoops, wheels, or a 340 swap can make a regular Challenger look convincing without establishing its factory identity.
