1971 Buick GSX Stage 1
For 1971, Buick broadened the GSX from the tightly defined package introduced in 1970. Buyers could combine GSX appearance equipment with multiple Gran Sport engines, including the 455 Stage 1. A genuine GSX Stage 1 therefore needs evidence for both sides of its identity: the GSX package and the Stage 1 drivetrain.
The documented Stage 1 engine record is the 455 cubic-inch, four-barrel V-8 listed at 345 horsepower with 8.5:1 compression. Contemporary/reference powertrain tables and GSX-specific references agree that 1971 GSX buyers selecting the 455 Stage 1 were limited to a four-speed manual or Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic, and that the Stage 1 axle specification used a 3.42:1 Positraction rear axle. The Stage 1 engine is also the point where brakes and chassis details become less generic: references state that 455-powered GSX cars mandated power front disc brakes, while heavy-duty/F41-type handling equipment remained an option.
Registry records report 124 total 1971 GSX cars and 17 with the Stage 1 engine. They also document cars in Arctic White, Black, Cortez Gold, Bittersweet Mist, Fire Red, Limemist Green, Platinum Mist, Stratomist Blue, and Verdemist Green. Those totals are useful model-level history, but an individual car still needs its own paperwork and drivetrain evidence.
The strongest checks are the body-number plate for the correct GS hardtop pathway, the TS engine production code and VIN derivative, the transmission identification, and paperwork showing both GSX and Stage 1 ordering. Badges, stripes, spoilers, hood tachometers, and auction descriptions are useful clues, but none proves the car by itself.
