Story

1970 Oldsmobile Rallye 350

The one-year Rallye 350 gave Oldsmobile buyers an unmistakable Sebring Yellow muscle car without stepping up to a 455-powered 4-4-2. The W45 package combined yellow bumpers and Super Stock II wheels, black-and-orange graphics, a fiberglass Force-Air hood, sport mirrors, dual exhaust, FE2 Rallye suspension, and the L74 350 four-barrel V8 on selected F-85 and Cutlass S two-door bodies.

The L74 Rocket 350 was rated at 310 gross horsepower and 390 lb-ft, with 10.25:1 compression and a Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel. A three-speed manual was standard, a Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 was optional, and the period order form listed an M20 wide-ratio four-speed. References disagree about four-speed production details, so surviving paperwork remains important. The standard rear axle ratio was 3.23:1, with 3.42:1 and 3.91:1 choices and optional Anti-Spin.

A VIN alone does not establish W45 identity. A window sticker, broadcast sheet, or other original paperwork showing W45 is the strongest proof. Lansing assembly, a build date no earlier than mid-January 1970, Sebring Yellow treatment, and Rallye-specific equipment are useful supporting checks. Dealer-installed chrome bumpers and wheel trim rings are documented, so those changes should be judged alongside the car's paperwork rather than treated as automatic disqualifiers.
