Story

1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator Boss 302

Mercury offered the Boss 302 only in the 1970 Cougar Eliminator, pairing the G-code engine with a four-speed manual transmission. The Eliminator remained a package on the standard Cougar hardtop rather than an XR-7 or convertible. Its black grille, side graphics, hood treatment, spoilers, wheels, full instruments, and competition suspension identify the package's appearance, but a G-code VIN and supporting factory records establish the Boss 302 drivetrain.

Published factory and marque records rate the 302 at 290 gross horsepower and 290 lb-ft with 10.5:1 compression and a four-barrel carburetor. Wide-ratio and close-ratio Toploader four-speeds are recorded. Traction-Lok was required with the Boss 302, while axle ratio and Drag Pak equipment varied by build and should be checked against the door label, invoice, build sheet, or Marti report.

Hemmings reports 469 Boss 302 Eliminators for 1970. It also reports 2,268 Eliminators in all, while the Eliminator Registry lists 2,267; both totals remain visible with their source and scope. The reported Boss 302 count is not inferred from the broader package total.

Six regular Eliminator colors are documented for 1970: Competition Orange, Competition Yellow, Competition Blue, Pastel Blue, Competition Gold, and Competition Green. The reviewed Mercury chart resolves Pastel Blue as code N and White as code M. Special-order paint required a blank paint field and six-digit DSO evidence. Paint and graphics alone do not establish a Boss 302 car.
