Story

1970 AMC Rebel Machine

The 1970 AMC Rebel Machine was American Motors' loudest factory mid-size muscle statement: a Rebel hardtop with a 340 hp 390, functional ram-air scoop, hood-mounted tach, heavy-duty chassis equipment, bold striping, and 15x7 road wheels. The launch cars are the famous red, white, and blue examples, but later production opened the package to other Rebel colors, so paint should be checked against the specific car rather than assumed from the model name.

The checked sources agree on the core mechanical identity: a special 390-cubic-inch AMC V-8 rated at 340 hp and 430 lb-ft, standard Borg-Warner T10 four-speed with Hurst linkage, optional Shift-Command automatic, power front disc brakes, rear drums, a handling package, E60x15 tires, and rear-axle ratios that depend on transmission and option state. The common production figure is 2,326 Rebel Machines, with the first 1,000 built in the red, white, and blue launch scheme.

Authenticity review should be careful because AMC documentation is not as centralized as Ford Marti-style records. Start with the body/model evidence, Machine-specific hood scoop and tach, paint and stripe evidence, 390 block stamp, valve-cover tag when present, transmission and shifter hardware, axle ratio/Twin-Grip evidence, 15x7 wheels, power front discs, suspension pieces, and interior trim. The gallery uses licensed Rebel Machine photos for exterior context and source cards for components where rights-safe detail photos are not yet available.
