Story
1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28
The 1968 Camaro Z/28 was a Chevrolet factory performance package built around the Trans-Am-minded 302 cubic-inch small-block. Source records identify RPO Z28 as a special performance package with the 302/290 hp engine, four-speed manual transmission, heavy-duty chassis equipment, front disc brakes, 15-inch rally wheels, 3.73 rear axle, and rally stripes. Camaro Research Group records separate this trim from ordinary Camaro model-line data: all regular 1967-1969 Z/28 production was coupe-based, with one documented 1968 Z/28 convertible built for Pete Estes outside the normal coupe pattern.
For 1968, CRG records the 302 engine suffix as MO because all 1968 Z/28s received smog equipment. The same source reports that the Muncie close-ratio M21 was the usual pairing, while M20 wide-ratio and M22 heavy-duty close-ratio four-speeds were optional. It also records multi-leaf rear springs for 1968-1969 Z/28s and states that J52 front disc brakes with rear drums automatically came with the package.
This record keeps model-line facts separate from target-specific Z/28 facts. Paint and interior tables are included as Camaro model-line decoding context from CRG records, with the Z/28-specific caveat kept explicit: a paint or trim code is not proof that an individual car is an original 1968 Z/28. Exact combinations still need cowl-tag, drivetrain, and paperwork evidence.
