Story

1967 Ford Galaxie 500 XL

For 1967, Ford shortened the public name to XL while factory body and production records still identify the series as Galaxie 500 XL. This page covers both XL bodies: the 63C fastback hardtop and 76B convertible. The 7-Litre was now a Sports Package on the XL, not a separate full-size model, so its 428 and very rare 427 combinations belong here.

The standard 289 made the XL broadly accessible, while two 390s, the 345-hp 428, and 410- or 425-hp 427 engines created a wide performance range. Transmission and axle choices were tightly linked to engine selection; the 427 required the four-speed. The 7-Litre package added front disc brakes, special suspension, dual low-restriction exhaust, Wide-Oval tires, and a sport steering wheel.

Factory records agree on the hardtop identity but one production sheet prints 76C for the convertible where the AMA and warranty-plate references use 76B. That discrepancy is preserved rather than silently normalized. Badges, a 428 swap, or 7-Litre equipment cannot authenticate a car without its warranty plate, drivetrain evidence, and original paperwork.

Market Observations

  • High bid $23,750

    Aug 24, 2025 · Bring a Trailer

76B XL convertible chassis 7W59Q161954 represented as a documented Q-code 428 7-Litre with SelectShift automatic · modified · unknown Reserve-not-met high bid, not a completed sale. The listing documents the Q-code VIN, 7-Litre equipment, U-code SelectShift automatic, 3.25 axle, trim tag, owner manual and service records. An aftermarket carburetor and MSD ignition, replacement service parts, recoated underbody areas, inoperative air conditioning, trim flaws, power drum brakes despite the package description, 46k miles shown, and the absence of a locked condition or component-originality inspection keep this observation separate from the H-code sale series.
  • Auction sale $33,000

    Jan 27, 2022 · Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale

76B XL convertible chassis 7G59H115747 represented with an H-code 390 two-barrel and automatic transmission · survivor · unknown Completed sale at the archive-published amount. The archive decodes the VIN and classifies the red-over-black convertible as original or highly original with an automatic transmission and TMU mileage. The amount includes the auction result as archived; documentation depth, component numbers, factory options, modifications, originality inspection, buyer-fee basis, and a locked condition grade remain unknown.
  • Auction sale $14,750

Oct 26, 2020 · Sullivan Auctioneers via Proxibid

76B XL convertible chassis 7G59H152684 represented with an H-code 390 two-barrel and automatic transmission · survivor · unknown No-reserve completed sale at the venue-published amount. The catalog represents the car as very original and single-family-owned since new, with 59,159 miles shown, paint loss, an aftermarket radio, power steering and power brakes. The auction expressly sold every vehicle as non-matching-numbers and did not authenticate the engine, transmission, mileage, tags, stamps, paperwork, or a locked condition grade.

Values move with paperwork, originality, options, condition, venue, and body style. High bids and guide values are labeled separately from completed sales.

Still Researching

  • engine Factory ratings and the engine-tag fields and locations for the 289, 390, 427, and 428 are documented, but complete assembly-code, component-casting, date, and stamp matrices by plant and build date were not recovered.
  • transmission Factory transmission paths are documented, but individual unit and tag compatibility still requires car-specific evidence.
  • rear axle The ratio schedule is documented, while exact axle assembly and tag details remain individual-car evidence.
  • brakes Factory dimensions and system types are normalized for the standard drums and optional front discs, but dated service part numbers and individual-car hardware applicability remain open.
  • suspension The factory AMA now documents the standard and heavy-duty engineering rates, spring dimensions, shock-piston sizes, stabilizer diameters, and front/rear geometry. Exact assembly-line or final-issue service part numbers by XL body, engine, equipment, and build date remain incomplete, and the AMA special-handling footnote does not explicitly identify the 7-Litre package.
  • option packages The XL standard power team, seating, console, trim, major engines, and a broad factory option catalog with selected prices are documented, but dealer sales codes, effective-date revisions, and the complete hardtop/convertible and powertrain compatibility matrix were not recovered.
  • production Overall body totals and registry 7-Litre counts are available, but factory records conflict on the convertible body-code notation and do not split every engine.
  • paint colors The brochure documents 15 monotone colors and 25 two-tone combinations, while the factory shop manual and warranty-plate references list additional Ford paint codes. Arcadian Blue and Seafoam Green are preserved with unknown XL availability; the exact effective-date, body, roof, and seven-trim compatibility matrix remains unavailable.
  • trim and appearance Core XL and 7-Litre trim is documented, but every roof, wheel, tire, and color combination is not.
  • interior The sales brochure advertises seven all-vinyl XL interior choices, while the body-specific final-issue soft-trim matrix and shop manual identify only five exact 63C/76B schemes: 8A, 8B, 8D, 8F, and 8U. The remaining two choices and any effective-date revisions are unresolved.
  • authenticity markers Warranty-plate fields are documented; individual originality still requires invoice, drivetrain tags, dates, and component inspection.
