Why It Matters
Ford gave the perimeter-frame XL a short-long-arm, ball-joint front suspension with each shock inside an SAE 5160 coil and a strut rod locating the lower arm. The live rear axle used two lower arms, one upper arm, coil springs, and a lateral track bar, with no rear stabilizer. Factory AMA specifications list 240 lb/in standard front springs and 130 lb/in standard rear springs, plus separate heavy-duty and special-handling calibrations. The 7-Litre Sports Package included special suspension, but the AMA chart does not explicitly map its police/special-handling footnote to that package.
