Story

1966 Ford Galaxie 500 7-Litre

Ford made the 7-Litre its own full-size series for 1966, offered only as a two-door hardtop and convertible. A 345-hp Q-code 428, C6 automatic, front disc brakes, heavy-duty suspension, bucket seats, console, and model-specific trim were standard. Buyers could choose a no-cost Toploader four-speed, while the scarce W- and R-code 427s required that manual transmission.

The identity begins with the car, not the badges. A hardtop uses VIN body-series 61 and door-tag body code 63D; a convertible uses 63 and 76D. The fifth VIN character identifies the factory engine. Added emblems, an FE swap, or a restored cabin cannot establish a factory 7-Litre without those records.

Ford recorded 8,705 hardtops and 2,368 convertibles. More detailed 427 and transmission splits are registry estimates because the underlying factory records did not survive, so they are not presented as exact production facts here.
