Story

1965 Plymouth Barracuda

The 1965 Barracuda retained its Valiant-based fastback structure and expansive wraparound rear glass while adding the Formula S performance package. Plymouth reported 64,596 cars.

Engines and transmissions

The 170 and 225 Slant Sixes covered economy applications. A 180-hp two-barrel 273 and 235-hp four-barrel Commando 273 supplied V8 performance. Three-speed, four-speed, and TorqueFlite paths required matching controls and axle applications.

Formula S and chassis

Formula S combined the Commando engine with heavy-duty suspension, instruments, wheels, tires, and identifying trim. Longitudinal torsion bars supported the front suspension and leaf springs located the live rear axle. Drum brakes remained the period system.

Identity

Start with the serial, title, shell, and ownership history. Match engine, induction, transmission, axle, brakes, suspension, paint, upholstery, instruments, glass, trim, dates, and records. Formula S emblems, a four-barrel 273, or modern wheels do not prove the package by themselves.
