1965 Ford Galaxie 500
Ford redesigned its full-size line for 1965 with a perimeter frame, a 119-inch wheelbase, vertically stacked headlamps, and a new coil-spring rear suspension. The Galaxie 500 occupied the broad middle of that line. Its four-door sedan, four-door hardtop, two-door hardtop, and convertible are body choices within one model-year identity; the more specialized Galaxie 500 XL and Galaxie 500 LTD remain separate series.
The powertrain range ran from the 150-hp 240 six and 200-hp 289 through the four-barrel 352 and 390. At the top, Q-code and R-code 427s delivered 410 and 425 advertised horsepower. Manuals included synchronized three-speed, overdrive, and Toploader four-speed paths, while Dual Range and Cruise-O-Matic automatics served the appropriate engine families. A 427, dual-four induction, or four-speed in a surviving car does not by itself establish a factory Q- or R-code identity; the VIN, warranty plate, tags, dates, and records must agree.
The all-new chassis paired independent coil-spring front suspension with a three-link, coil-spring live rear axle. Self-adjusting 11-inch drums were standard, power assist was optional, and 427 cars received the factory's larger lining schedule. Rear gearing varied by power team, with Equa-Lock available across selected ratios.
