Story

1967 Mercury Comet 427 R-Code

The 427 R-Code was a factory special-order drivetrain configuration within the 1967 Comet line, not one separate Comet model. Reviewed records document R-code examples in the Comet 202 two-door sedan and Cyclone hardtop, while the reported production breakdown also includes Capri and Caliente hardtops. The body series and trim must therefore be established separately from the engine code.

R in the fifth VIN position identifies the dual-four-barrel 427 FE path. References report the solid-lifter side-oiler at 425 horsepower and distinguish it from the lower-rated W-code single-four-barrel 427. A four-speed Toploader is documented on reviewed R-code examples. Rear-axle evidence is car-specific: one documented Cyclone has a 3.89 conventional axle, while a featured 202 has a 3.89 Traction-Lok, so this page does not impose one differential specification on every car.

A registry-attributed breakdown reports 60 total 427 Comets: 51 R-code and nine W-code. Its R-code body split is 22 Comet 202 sedans, six Capri hardtops, four Caliente hardtops, and 19 Cyclone hardtops. Those figures remain reported rather than factory-ledger verified.

Authentication starts with the VIN and body series, then reconciles factory paperwork, engine castings and dates, induction, transmission, axle tag, paint, trim, and body reinforcement. A 427 engine, hood, badges, stripes, or race-style equipment cannot establish a factory R-code car by appearance alone. The gallery uses licensed exact-year body examples; it does not claim those photographed cars are R-codes.

Market Observations

  • High bid $175,000

    Jul 29, 2023 · Bring a Trailer

Factory R-Code 427 Cyclone hardtop 7H15R543829 with Elite Marti Report and 2008 refurbishment · restored · unknown The high bid did not meet reserve and is not a sale. The archive documents a multi-year refurbishment, factory literature, Elite Marti Report, a period-correct but pre-production-date 427 side-oiler casting, four-speed transmission, and 3.89 rear end.
  • Auction sale $40,700

    Mar 25, 2021 · RM Sotheby's Open Roads, March 2021

Factory R-Code 427 Cyclone hardtop 7H15R549810 sold as an incomplete restoration project · modified · project RM Sotheby's displayed result includes buyer premium. The archive documents a 30-year barn stay, incomplete restoration, loose parts, a 1964-dated replacement 427 block, and a fiberglass hood. Modified and project describe the car at sale and do not diminish its Marti-documented factory R-Code identity.
  • Auction sale $80,640

    Jan 16, 2020 · Bonhams Scottsdale 2020

Factory R-Code 427 Caliente hardtop 7H11R545017 restored to race-ready condition · restored · unknown Bonhams' displayed result includes buyer premium. The archive identifies the fifth-position R in the chassis number, dual-four-barrel 427, four-speed transmission, restoration, and documented competition history. The result should be compared within its Caliente body and restored race-car context.

Values move with paperwork, originality, options, condition, venue, and body style. High bids and guide values are labeled separately from completed sales.

  • VIN engine code R in the fifth VIN position identifies the dual-four-barrel 427 path · VIN/body serial; corroborate with factory paperwork · fraud detection
  • Body-series identity The body-series characters must identify the claimed 202, Capri, Caliente, or Cyclone body · VIN/body serial and door data · trim correctness
  • Original engine and dates Block, heads, induction, and dates should align with the build record; replacements must be disclosed · Engine castings and dates, carburetor tags, intake, build record, and registry documentation · numbers matching
  • Transmission and axle agreement Four-speed and axle tags, ratio, differential type, and dates should agree with the individual records · Transmission tag, axle tag, build sheet, invoice, or Marti report · numbers matching
  • Paint and trim agreement Paint, interior, stripe, wheel, and body equipment should match the door tag and records · Door tag, hidden original finish, invoice, build record, or Marti report · trim correctness
  • Factory identification and data-plate field locations The warranty number sequence carries model year, assembly plant, body serial code, engine code, and consecutive unit number; the vehicle-data line carries body style, paint, trim, date, DSO, rear-axle, and transmission codes. · Warranty plate/data plate, plus the official VIN stamping on the top surface of the radiator and front fender apron support near the radiator fill cap for Mercury intermediate-size cars · fraud detection
  • Axle-code locking differential convention Factory identification guidance separates axle coding by convention: numbers designate conventional axles and letters designate locking differentials. · Vehicle-data plate rear-axle code; corroborate with axle tag and build records for the individual car · numbers matching

Still Researching

  • engine R-code identity and major engine specifications are recorded, and detail rows now normalize the reviewed 427 FE bore, stroke, block construction, side-oiler oiling path, crankshaft, dual-four-barrel induction, horsepower, torque, and compression references. Complete casting, carburetor-list, distributor, exhaust, and component date-code matrices remain unresolved.
  • transmission The Toploader four-speed path is documented, but exact tags, ratios, shifters, and date windows are incomplete.
  • rear axle Documented examples differ between conventional and Traction-Lok 3.89 axles, so no universal differential claim is made.
  • brakes The reviewed material does not establish one R-code brake specification across all documented body styles.
  • suspension Heavy-duty front springs, 0.84-inch front stabilizer bar, and semi-elliptic rear leaf springs with standard staggered shock absorber layout (for 4-speed manual cars) are documented based on factory literature. Specific part numbers, spring-rate charts, and bushing materials remain unresolved.
  • option packages R- and W-code engine paths are separated, but the full compatibility and price matrix is not.
  • production The 51-car R-code total and body split are registry-attributed rather than verified from a reviewed factory ledger.
  • paint colors Nineteen model-year Mercury colors are recorded, but R-code frequencies and individual combinations are not.
  • trim and appearance Body families and major example-specific cues are recorded, but universal badges, hood, wheel, tire, stripe, and delete-item rules are not.
  • interior A documented Cyclone example and model-line context are recorded, but the full trim-code and equipment matrix is not.
  • authenticity markers Factory identification guidance now documents the warranty/data-plate field sequence, the official intermediate-size VIN stamping location, and the conventional-versus-locking axle-code convention, but complete casting, carburetor, intake, exhaust, reinforcement, and component date guidance remains incomplete.
