Story

The 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 was the bright-trim full-size series between the regular Galaxie and the new Galaxie 500XL. Ford offered the 500 as a two-door sedan, four-door sedan, two-door Club Victoria hardtop, four-door Town Victoria hardtop, and Sunliner convertible. The 500XL was a separate sporty series with bucket seats, a console, and floor shift, so those cars remain adjacent context rather than being silently merged into this record.

The engine range ran from the 223 six and 292 Y-block through 352 and 390 FE choices. Ford-derived records also document early high-performance 390 paths and the later 406: a single-four-barrel version rated at 385 gross hp and a three-two-barrel version rated at 405 gross hp. These are configurations of the Galaxie 500, not separate car models. B- or G-code claims require the warranty plate, dated engine and induction hardware, mandatory four-speed, axle, heavy-duty chassis equipment, factory paperwork, and ownership history to agree.

The 119-inch chassis used independent coil-spring front suspension, an asymmetrical leaf-spring live rear axle, and four-wheel drums. Regular cars could use three-speed, overdrive, Fordomatic, Cruise-O-Matic, or eligible four-speed paths; Ford's price schedule required the four-speed with the 375-, 385-, 401-, and 405-hp engines. Engine-specific axle ratios and optional Equa-Lock further separate the drivetrain configuration from the body identity.

Body-style records report 363,005 Galaxie 500s across five bodies when summed, but no audited engine, transmission, paint, option, or 406 split was recovered, so this page publishes the five body totals rather than inventing a performance total. A secondary reference reports a $2,667 base price while Ford-derived option prices provide better-defined amounts; the exact body and destination basis remains unresolved. For an individual car, the VIN and warranty plate, body, color, trim, date, DSO, axle and transmission fields, dated components, protected finishes, invoices, and restoration history should form one coherent record.
