Story

1987 Buick Regal Grand National

The 1987 Regal Grand National family combined two-door five-passenger notchback coupe with WE2 Grand National, solid roof, removable glass roof panels, power Astroroof, documented limited-slip axle configurations. This page keeps those factory choices together without treating an engine, stripe, badge, or trim package as a separate car identity.

Engines and transmissions

The 1987 regular Grand National used the intercooled 231-cubic-inch LC2 with sequential-port injection and distributorless ignition. Revised electronic controls raised the advertised rating to 245 horsepower and 355 lb-ft. Turbo, intercooler, injectors, sensors, ECM calibration, fuel system, exhaust, cooling, transmission, axle, emissions equipment, dates, and records must remain one coherent regular 1987 installation; GNX-specific turbo, intercooler, calibration, transmission, rear-suspension, vent, and numbered-program details remain outside this family. Transmission, induction, cooling, exhaust, axle, emissions equipment, and dates must match the selected engine path.

Chassis and brakes

The body-on-frame G-body used unequal-length front control arms with coils and a four-link, coil-sprung live rear axle. Grand National content added performance-tuned Gran Touring suspension and fast-ratio power steering. Power front discs and rear drums used electro-hydraulic assist; axle, limited-slip, steering, spring, brake, wheel, and tire details still follow the SPID label and individual-car evidence. Brake, steering, spring, damper, axle, ratio, wheel, and tire equipment varied by configuration and must be reconciled to factory and car-specific records.

Body, trim, and proof

Start with VIN or serial, body tag, title, shell, and ownership history. Then reconcile drivetrain, chassis, protected finish, cabin, trim, dates, and records. Replaceable badges, stripes, wheels, or a swapped engine cannot establish factory configuration.

Exact-year rear three-quarter view retained for the roof, rear glass, quarter panels, three-piece spoiler, lamps, bumper, Grand National identification, chrome sport wheels, and stance.Greg Gjerdingen via Wikimedia Commons · CC BY 2.0

Still Researching

  • production The 20,193 regular-WE2 total is corroborated and related Turbo Regal identities are separated, but no reviewed audited ledger breaks regular Grand National production down by roof, limited-slip transition, comfort or audio equipment, assembly date, plant, export, or survivor status.
  • paint colors WE2 establishes code 19 black, but public sources do not provide a complete paint supplier, plant, formula-revision, panel-finish, wheel-finish, and production-date matrix.
  • interior Gray and black Pallex trim, console, wheel, and displays are documented, but the complete seat, upholstery, stitching, headrest emblem, carpet, belt, roof, comfort, audio, supplier, and extended-run change matrix is not publicly reconciled.
  • authenticity markers Public model-year references cannot establish one survivor's born-with WE2 body, regular LC2 hardware, 200-4R, axle and differential status, Powermaster brakes, suspension, paint, cabin, roof, options, mileage, or component dates.
