Story

1987 Buick Regal GNX

The 1987 Regal GNX family combined two-door five-passenger notchback coupe with numbered GNX conversion program configurations. This page keeps those factory choices together without treating an engine, stripe, badge, or trim package as a separate car identity.

Engines and transmissions

The GNX began with the intercooled 231-cubic-inch LC2 architecture and received a faster-responding turbo, revised intercooler, low-restriction exhaust, GNX controls, and transmission preparation. Buick advertised 276 horsepower and 360 lb-ft. Period test estimates must not replace that factory rating, and later turbos, front-mount intercoolers, injectors, chips, exhausts, transmissions, or boost changes must be labeled. Transmission, induction, cooling, exhaust, axle, emissions equipment, and dates must match the selected engine path.

Chassis and brakes

The GNX retained the Regal's independent coil-spring front but used a conversion-specific rear location system. A longitudinal torque arm ran from a new crossmember to a special differential cover, while a Panhard rod located the live axle laterally. The 3.42 limited-slip axle, staggered 16-inch tire package, steering, brakes, and every GNX bracket and mount must remain tied to one car's program and service evidence. Brake, steering, spring, damper, axle, ratio, wheel, and tire equipment varied by configuration and must be reconciled to factory and car-specific records.

Body, trim, and proof

Start with VIN or serial, body tag, title, shell, and ownership history. Then reconcile drivetrain, chassis, protected finish, cabin, trim, dates, and records. Replaceable badges, stripes, wheels, or a swapped engine cannot establish factory configuration.

Exact-subject rear three-quarter view retained for the deck-lid GNX badge, spoiler, lamps, bumper, widened wheel openings, rear wheel and tire, roof, glass, and body proportions; auction context and current condition remain subject-specific.Greg Gjerdingen via Wikimedia Commons · CC BY 2.0
